Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (otherwise known as ADHD) affects adults and children, limiting intelligent and creative individuals from being productive, staying organized, sustaining focus and avoiding distractions.
These individuals often have a great energy and excitement about their ideas, but have difficulty following through and completing tasks. We help clients develop behavioral strategies to aid them in improving their ability to maintain and direct their attention effectively. We help them identify how they get stuck and provide skills that can allow them to overcome these obstacles.
Characteristics
ADHD is characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or impulsivity that last for at least 6 months, often starting before age 7.
- Common symptoms include short attention span, disorganization, being easily distracted, tendencies to lose things necessary for important tasks, and forgetfulness in daily activities.
- Some people with ADHD experience hyperactivity (being always “on the go” or frequently feeling fidgety) or impulsivity (acting without thinking, interrupting others).
- Research has shown that individuals with ADHD generally have under-arousal in certain parts of the brain.
