Intellectual assessment is also offered for children who are being considered for gifted programs in school.

An intellectual assessment identifies areas of cognitive strength and weakness. These areas may include verbal and language functioning, visual-spatial functioning, numerical reasoning, and memory functioning. Learning disabilities are suspected when there is a significant discrepancy between a child’s intellectual functioning and academic performance and when other psychological and environmental factors are ruled out.
Assessment is conducted in a supportive environment to maximize performance and validity of results. Information is gathered using a variety of the most up-to-date and reliable tests and procedures, specific to the child’s presenting problem. Classroom observations and teacher interviews are often used to gain a comprehensive view of the child.
